Ceiling Junction Box Red Wire

In most cases you see a red wire in an outlet box only in special circumstances.

Samuel the red wire from the ceiling fan fixture box is typically connected to the blue wire of the ceiling fan which is for the light fixture of the ceiling fan. If you change a light fixture and find a red wire in the electrical box chances are the black wire from the fixture needs to go to the red wire in the box.

It gets connected to the ground wire in the ceiling box which is the bare copper wire a green wire or if the house is old enough not present. Another is that the box is on a circuit three way switch loop. Connect the black wire to the screw located in swith 1. If there is no ground wire in the ceiling box then connect the ground wire of the fixture to the box if the box is metal.

Typically the red wire is controlled by a separate wall switch. This wire is commonly red or blue but almost always has a tag on the wire that reads light. Normally you ll see a red wire in places you would expect a ceiling fan. Splice the neutrals and grounds together.

One is that the outlet is a 240 volt one which requires an extra hot wire. If your ceiling fan does not have a light fixture then simply cap off the red wire and attach the fan motor to the black wire. Connect black fan wire to the black ceiling wire. Connect the blue wire to the red wire.

The convention is to use the red hot wire for the fan and the black hot wire to control the lights. Split the incoming hot wire into a y and connect it to a terminal on each switch. The answer is that the red wire is the hot wire from the switch itself.
