Ceiling Fan Light Chain Broke

Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. Yet a broken ceiling fan pull chain is a common problem for many owners of ceiling fans. Turn off the power remove the light bulb and unscrew the fixture from the electrical box. Children may play with the fan s chain and snap it off.

But there is no need to replace the entire ceiling fan or even call in a technician for this repair. Ceiling fans with lights have a pull chain to turn the fan or the lights on or off. The switch will also need to be replaced if the chain will not pull down or if it broke off inside the fan housing. A few models do allow you to reattach the chain but you must access the switch before.

Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. If your ceiling fan or the light on the fan doesn t work when the chain is pulled then the problem is most likely a broken fan pull chain switch. See if you can find the broken end of the pull chain. If your ceiling fan pull chain is broken because it was pulled out of the switch there s an easy way to fix it.

Open up the switch in the ceiling fan and remove the broken piece of chain. Also the light switch itself may wear out or fail. Touch one voltage tester probe to the black wire and the other to the white wire. A broken pull chain on a ceiling fan almost always requires replacement of the on off switch as a repair.

An easy repair you. If the voltage indicator doesn t light up the power is off. Unfortunately the only practical way to resolve this issue is to replace the chain. If you pull too hard on the pull chain the chain can break or come out of its socket.

Pull the fixture down but keep your hands away from the wires. Most commonly found in ceiling fans these chains can break down and stop working. If you do you may be able to remove the remaining piece and replace it with a new chain or attach a new chain to the stub of the old. Many ceiling fans and some ceiling light fixtures use pull chains to operate the unit.

You will probably have to remove lower the light fixture section of the unit to get to the fan section. Even during normal use the weak beaded metal pull chain can easily break with a moderate pull.
